Brooks Lee's move from shortstop to third base has some interesting short-term and long-term domino effects for the Twins' infield.
First, in the present, it creates something of a revolving door at shortstop for the Twins, with Ryan Kreidler, Orlando Arcia, and Tristan Gray each receiving at least one start there since Lee slid over to third base less than a week ago. That, in and of itself, is uncommon, as MLB teams typically don't cycle through shortstops.
Second, in the near future, it clears a path for 2024 first-round pick and top-100 prospect Kaelen Culpepper to take over as the starting shortstop whenever he's called up by the Twins, eliminating a potential source of friction if Lee were still playing shortstop at that point.
Third, in the theoretical future in which Royce Lewis plays his way back into the Twins' plans following last week's Triple-A demotion, it blocks his path to return at third base, his position since mid-2023. Lewis has started just once at another position since, playing second base — for five innings — on September 4, 2024.
